Hilbre High School

Dance

Dance at Hilbre is a very popular subject that achieves outstanding results across all key stages; Dance was acknowledged in the school 2016 Ofsted report for pupils' excellent progress at GCSE.

In year 7 all pupils have a Dance lesson, once a week, in mixed groups of approximately 24. Year 7 pupils are introduced to the choreographic process through the exploration of a range of dance styles. Whilst predominantly practical, pupils are encouraged to develop analytical skills both of their own work and that of others.

In year 8, Dance is a very popular optional subject. There are 2 classes in each half of the year, of up to 20 pupils. Pupils opting to continue to study Dance facilitates rapid and sustained progress and an extremely positive learning environment. In year 8, pupils develop their choreography skills, learning more complex techniques and develop their technical and expressive skills, whilst continually developing theoretical aspects of dance appreciation.

GCSE runs over three years and pupils follow the AQA syllabus, which explores and assesses pupils on 3 core components:

* Performance

* Choreography

* Appreciation

In Sixth Form we offer A-Level Dance, where students reflect upon both historical and current dance practices, making them more relevant, and inspiring a life-long passion and appreciation for dance.

Dance is delivered in a bespoke studio, with full length mirrors, lighting rig and top of the range sound equipment.

Performance opportunities arise throughout the year for all year groups and we encourage pupils to get involved with as much as they can, particularly our annual school musical show.

Dance and performance is an integral part of school life and pupils are encouraged to use our facilities to develop their own work, rehearse and develop their performance skills.
